Reis Kenia
Van 24 maart tot 15 april zijn Liesbeth Fokkes en Helga Krist (vriendin) naar Kenia geweest. Ze hebben daar verschillende (oud)studenten bezocht. In Mtwapa hebben ze een bijeenkomst gehouden waar zowel ouders als studenten welkom waren. Het was een heel geslaagde bijeenkomst, net als de studenten bijeenkomst aan het eind van het bezoek. Ze hebben ook een aantal oud studenten bezocht die ze al heel lang niet meer hadden gezien (Sofia en Dama).
Voor de eerste keer hebben ze ook de studenten in Nairobi bezocht. Voorheen lukte dat door omstandigheden nooit. Dit was een hele belevenis zo met de trein naar Nairobi en later weer naar Mombasa. Met de trein reizen in Kenia is niet te vergelijken met treinreizen in Nederland. De controle op het station is minstens zo streng als op Schiphol. Vanuit Nairobi controleren zelfs honden je bagage.
In Nairobi wonen 11 miljoen mensen en 5 daarvan zijn onze (oud) studenten. Die wonen en studeren op heel verschillende plekken. Sommige op de campus, andere op kamers, maar ook in een appartement of tweekamer woning. Zo zie je een groot deel van Nairobi, want ze zijn kriskras door Nairobi gereden. Gelukkig niet zelf maar met de taxi, dat is wel zo veilig.
Het was interessant om twee universiteiten te bezoeken. Net als hier zijn ook daar de campus groot en studeren er veel jongeren. Aan de ene kant is het vergelijkbaar met hier (pc’s, gebouwen, kantine) en aan de andere kant is het allemaal veel eenvoudiger (meubilair, bibliotheek e.d).
Iedereen heeft het erg gewaardeerd dat ze hen een bezoek brachten en ook de mensen in Nairobi waren erg blij dat vanuit de stichting nu iemand bij hen op bezoek kwam. |

Trip to Kenya
From March 24th to April 15th, Liesbeth Fokkes and Helga Krist (a friend) traveled to Kenya. They visited several (former) students there. In Mtwapa, they held a gathering where both parents and students were welcome. It was a very successful gathering, as was the student gathering at the end of the visit. They also visited several former students they hadn't seen in a long time (Sofia and Dama).
For the first time, they also visited the students in Nairobi. Due to unforeseen circumstances, this had never been possible before. It was quite an experience, taking the train to Nairobi and then back to Mombasa. Traveling by train in Kenya is nothing like traveling by train in the Netherlands. The security checks at the station are at least as strict as at Schiphol Airport. Even dogs check your luggage from Nairobi.
Nairobi has 11 million inhabitants, and five of them are our (former) students. They live and study in very different places. Some on campus, others in student rooms, but also in apartments or two-bedroom houses. This way, you see a large part of Nairobi, as they drove crisscross through Nairobi. Fortunately, they didn't go by themselves, but by taxi, which is safer. It was interesting to visit two universities. Just like here, the campuses there are large, and many young people study there. On the one hand, it's comparable to here (computers, buildings, cafeteria), and on the other, it's all much simpler (furniture, library, etc.).
Everyone really appreciated their visit, and the people in Nairobi were also very happy that someone from the foundation was visiting them. |
